Internet Predators-The 411

Internet predators are a new breed of stalker that hide behind the anonymity that cyberspace provides. And, while the computer age has opened a whole new world for our children to explore and learn from, there is also a dark side that looms in the form of Internet predators.

The internet has become a favorite spot for pedophiles who can pretend to be anyone they choose in their search for vulnerable children. Additionally, it has become a way for these perverts to share information on potential victims. Just as you might share recipes with a close online friend, they meet others who claim children as their victims. They share stories, pictures and provide encouragement along the way.

Internet predators present themselves in online areas children frequent such as video game sites or those that cater to children's interests. They get to know the child they are talking to by presenting references to subjects that children enjoy or, may initially, find taboo. It is sometimes the secrecy of the subjects that helps to lay the trap as children are apprehensive about discussing some off limit subjects with their parents.

Don't allow your child to be drawn in by their tactics. Make sure that they are fully aware and understand the implications and dangers of these types of stalkers. It is also imperative that your children understand that they may talk to you about ANY subject that comes up. Don't forget that online predators have no conscience and will use any means to gain trust. Internet predators will not go away, so, it is our responsibility to look for ways to curtail their access.

Keep in mind that Internet predators are nothing more than con artists who are after your most precious commodity. Take the time to warn your children of the signs of these types of stalkers. It will keep them safe from harm and allow you to sleep better at night.
