Urban Safety
Many people that live in the city take many safety concerns for granted, but those of us who are just visiting tend to be a bit more worried and that can show to others. No matter what city in the world you are going to visit, you should always get good urban safety information that pertains to that particular city even before you get on the plane.
Practicing urban safety wherever you go
Often times when we are traveling we get so wrapped up in all the sights before our eyes that we tend to forget to look out for ourselves. Tourists are notoriously preoccupied people and that is what makes them prime targets for criminals. That is why every traveller needs to brush up on their urban safety before they hit the streets of a foreign city, whether it is on your home country or not. One of the first things we should all try to maintain whenever we are in a different environment is the utmost confidence. Even if you do not feel full of yourself, fake it. Criminals take cues from the body language of the people they are watching and are much more likely to steer clear of people that look like they know what they are doing.
There is safety in numbers, but at the same time there is also the cover of other people that make it easy for pickpockets to work their magic. So, do not keep your money or your wallet in the back pocket of your pants, it is just making it too easy for the thief. This also applies to backpacks where you should not place anything of value. But, if you do feel as though you are being followed or being stalked, your best bet is to go into a well populated are or a shop where you can find that safety in numbers.
Stay with the pack
A common place for crimes to occur in any city is one their mass transit, mainly trains that are underground. Some cities have better urban safety precautions than others, but there can never be police everywhere and at all times, so you have to use some common sense while riding the train. The best urban safety for users of mass transit is not to get onto a car of the train that is empty - it is the perfect place for a criminal to do his job. If you are riding one and all of the other people exit, simply get out at that same stop and quickly move into the next car over. Avoid doing this while the train is moving as you will see some locals do as this is dangerous and people have fallen onto the tracks while moving between cars before.
Urban safety, at its most basic, means always staying well aware of what is and who is going on around you and trying your best to stay in areas that are populated.
