Preventative parking lot safety
You should already be thinking about your personal parking lot safety before you even park the car, whether it is for the entire day or only for a few minutes. Don't just get out of the car and rush to your destination, instead take a few seconds to jot down exactly where you are parked. This way you will not have to waste time looking for where you parked. Also try to park in a place that is very well light, such as directly under the street light. Put away and out of sight anything that might tempt anyone to break into your car or to give them the idea that you might be a worthwhile target. Always walk with confidence! Criminals are less likely to attack someone that seems as though they would put up a fight or cause a commotion.
Staying alert on your way back to your car
If and when it is possible walk to your car with someone else. You are much more likely to be attacked if you are alone, if need be ask if you can have an escort from security - many companies are more than willing to walk you to your car. Before you get into your car, check all around it as well as inside to be sure that there is no one lurking in the shadows. if you are shopping alone, only get those things that you need - if you have your hands full, you are that much more vulnerable. Whatever you do, do not go anywhere near someone who is just sitting in their car! Don't wait until you are at your car to start digging for your keys, have them in hand so that you do not have to waste any more time. When you do get in the car, the first thing you should do is lock all of the doors again - only them should you put on your seat-belt.
